Miltiadis D. Lytras (PhD, 2004)
Supervisor: Associate Professor N. Pouloudi
Abstract The PhD Thesis is concentrating in the convergence of knowledge management and technology enhanced learning towards the effectiveness in the design and exploitation of learning content. The main emphasis is paid to the modelling of the learning content development process and through ontological considerations the thesis contributes in theory and practice as follows: It proposes a Life Cycle model and nine learning processes that formulate the integrated Learning Content Development Framework. The key innovation is the justification and testing of 21 categories of semantics that enrich the learning content in each stage of the Framework and address critical problem of the Learning Objects Paradigm. The practical implications of the thesis are significant since through its propositions provides new insights in the way we build "effective" technology enhanced learning and knowledge management systems. In fact the ultimate outcome is that we cannot consider e-learning without the support of advanced semantics that provide value layers to content, in three categories: Knowledge Management Support, Learning Exploitation and Learning Processes Support. In the last year the key outcomes of the thesis are extended through an intensive application of Semantic Web Concepts and Technologies. Short CV Miltiadis holds a PhD degree in Information Systems (Semantic Web for Knowledge Management and Technology Enhanced Learning) from the Department of Management Science and Technology, AUEB (2004), an MBA from AUEB (1998) and a B.Sc. Degree in Informatics AUEB (1995). His research focuses on semantic web, knowledge management and e-learning, with more than 80 publications in these areas. He has co-edited / co-edits, 25 special issues in International Journals (Like IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Internet Computing, IEEE Transactions on Education, Journal of Knowledge Management, British Journal on Educational Technology, etc) and has authored/edited 12 books. He is the founder and officer of the Semantic Web and Information Systems Special Interest Group in the Association for Information Systems as well as the co-founder of AIS SIG on Reusable Learning Objects and Learning Design. Miltiadis is the Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Knowledge and Learning as well as the Editor in Chief or International Journal of Teaching and Case Studies. He serves also as the Co-Editor in Chief of International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems. Recently he undertook the editing responsibility with Prof. John Carroll of the International Journal of Social and Humanistic Computing. Dr. Lytras is currently an Assistant Professor (407/80) in the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department-CEID (University of Patras), and in Department of Library Science and Information Systems (ATEI Athens).
